My name is Boris "Alex" Treiber. I am the son of a refugee and a first-generation Canadian. I was born and raised in the midtown area of Toronto and I currently reside in the Leslieville/Riverside area with my husband, Jeff, and our Australian Sheppard, Brooklyn.
I graduated from the University of Windsor Faculty of Law and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law at the top of my class, earning both a Canadian and an American law degree.
In law school, I was the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards and was selected to give the Valedictorian address to my graduating class.
My legal career began at McCarthy Tetrault LLP, one of Canada's Bay Street "Seven Sister" law firms. I summered, articled and was hired into the firm's employer/management-side Labour and Employment Group as a Labour & Employment Associate. In that role, I was a trusted employer-side advisor in all workplace law matters, including, employment standards, wrongful dismissals, unjust dismissals, constructive dismissals, human rights, privacy, workplace investigations, occupational health and safety, labour arbitrations, collective bargaining, and labour and employment issues arising in corporate transactions.
In 2018, I left McCarthy Tetrault LLP to move to New York City to join Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, one of America's most preeminent and largest law firms on Wall Street. At that firm, I was hired into the firm's General Litigation Department as a Litigation Associate. In that role, I represented multinational organizations in a wide range of complex civil litigation and investigatory matters, including securities, environmental tort, bankruptcy, products liability class actions, and workplace investigations.
I moved back to Toronto in 2021 and rejoined McCarthy Tetrault LLP's Labour and Employment Group before leaving again to start Treiber Law in 2024.
I have represented clients before numerous provincial, state, federal and appellate courts, including the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, the Canada Industrial Relations Board, the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Southern District of New York, the Southern District of Florida, the Bankruptcy District of Delaware, the Bankruptcy District Court of the Southern District of New York, the District Court of Travis County (Texas), the Texas Court of Appeal, the Texas Supreme Court, Illinois Circuit Court, and the Illinois Court of Appeal.
I am called to the bar in Ontario, New York State and the Southern District of New York.
I am a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the New York Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association.
I am a member of the Ontario Bar Association's Labour and Employment Section Executive and am frequently asked to speak before the Ontario Bar Association's Labour and Employment Section on hot topics in labour and employment law.
I have also been a sessional instructor at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law teaching the next generation of labour and employment lawyers.
Put simply, there are very few lawyers with a resume like mine.
In law school, I graduated at the top of my class.
In practice, I have worked at some of the best and largest law firms in Toronto and New York City.
I teach the next generation of labour and employment lawyers.
I am smart, hard-working, compassionate and a fierce advocate for my clients.
I started Treiber Law because I witnessed first-hand a gap in the legal services provided to workers and businesses.
Too many workers and businesses are priced out of excellent legal advice.
Too many firms drive up costs needlessly when a resolution can be reached expediently without hubris and litigating for the sake of litigating.
Too many firms are terrible negotiators, taking unrealistic (and sometimes unethical) positions that only cause the opposing party to harden and refuse to negotiate.
I will always look out for your best interests and tell you my honest opinion of your case.
I have earned a reputation of being a straight-shooter even when that conversation is difficult.
For workers, I offer an unrivalled view on your case because of my prior experience. I know what most employers are thinking about your case because I was the one giving advice to employers about cases like yours.
For businesses, I have a decade of experience working on behalf of some of the largest businesses in Canada and the United States. I can offer your business the same Bay Street and Wall Street experience without charging an arm and a leg.
